Exground filmfest presents once again the highlights of independently produced short and feature films - about 250 productions, among them several premieres.

This year’s host country, Canada, will open the festival with THE NOVENA by BernardÉmond. Correspondingly, the retrospective is dedicated to David Cronenberg: five oeuvres of this master of puristic film language will be shown.

Other highlights are the German premiere of THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA by Tommy Lee Jones, Robert Altman's A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION as a Preview, TAKESHI'S by Takeshi Kitano as well as TIDELAND by Terry Gillian.

New Directors/New Films is one of the country’s premier showcases for the work of fresh and unsung international and American filmmakers. Over the course of more than three decades, the festival has introduced innovative works by talented directors from all over the world, many of whom have become major figures in world cinema, including Pedro Almodóvar, Héctor Babenco, Terence Davies, Atom Egoyan, Chen Kaige, Spike Lee, Richard Linklater, John Sayles, Steven Spielberg, and Wim Wenders, among many others.

Magnolia Pictures and Shorts International have announced a partnership to bring this year's 10 Oscar-nominated shorts (live-action and animated) to theaters before the Academy Award ceremony on March 5. The series will kick off Friday, February 24, in New York and Los Angeles. The series will also play in select theaters in San Francisco, Detroit, Berkeley, Atlanta, Seattle, Denver, Austin, Portland and Chicago. The two distribution companies anticipate adding more markets in the coming weeks.
"We're excited to have the opportunity to showcase these fantastic films while they're still in contention for the big prize," Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles said in a statement.
"In the past, only insiders and Academy voters got to see this powerful, short form cinema. Now, for the first time, they're available to theatre-goers and will reach the audience they deserve," Carter Pilcher, CEO of Shorts International, added in the statement.
The shorts will have weeklong runs in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Detroit, Berkeley, Atlanta, Seattle, and Denver. They will also screen February 26th and 27th in Austin and Portland, and in Chicago March 3rd through 9th, with additional cities added in the next few weeks.

Starting in 1997 (with the nominated films from 1996), the Academy began presenting its now-annual "Shorts!" program in the spring, following the Academy Awards. The event has sold out every year, as audiences embraced an opportunity to see the nominees and winners in the short animation and live-action categories, and to hear from some of the filmmakers.

Then last year, we tried something different -- screening the films the week before the Oscar presentation. A packed house was treated to two panel discussions with all of the nominated filmmakers in both categories, hosted by past live-action short film nominee and actress JoBeth Williams. This screening promises to provide those in attendance with an insider's knowledge of these two categories prior to the Oscar ceremony on Sunday, March 5th.

The Icelandic short film The Last Farm, written and directed by Runar Runarsson, has been nominated for the Oscar awards as the best live action short film.
The Last Farm, which is produced by Skuli Malmquist and Thorir Snaer Sigurjonsson of ZikZak Filmworks, has travelled to many festivals in the past year and received various prizes and awards.
The film tells the story of an old farmer, played by Jon Sigurbjornsson, who lives with his wife in a remote valley where all the farms except one has been abandoned.

Runar Runarsson is currently studying at The Danish Filmschool in Copenhagen.

SIDASTI BAERINN(Last Farm) wins the DANZANTE AWARD
The short film directed by the Icelandic filmmaker Runar Runarsson has been awarded the prize ‘Danzante’ at the International Short Film Contest of Huesca Film Festival. An award endowed with 9000 Euros and which means an initial selection for Oscars, the awards given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood. The awards will be presented tonight, during the closing ceremony of this 33rd edition, which will be presented by the actresses Llum Barrera and Melani Olivares

For its part, the jury of the critics –made up of Geoff Pingree, David del Rio and Toni Vall– has given the Award ‘José Manuel Porquet’ of the critics to the Belgian short film ROMANCE directed by Douglas Boswell. It has also given two special mentions for MEDIANERAS (the winner of the Prize ‘Cacho Pallero’ at Iberoamerican Contest), a film made by the director from Buenos Aires Gustavo Taretto, and to the winner of ‘Danzante’ prize, SIDASTI BAERINN.

The Last Farm is in the international Selection for the Shortshorts filmfestival in Japan.
The festival will be held with SSFF ASIA! Last year the SSFF was recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as a qualifying festival for the annual Academy Awards R, and the festival continues to be a hub of short visual content in Japan. This year, the 7th Short Shorts Film Festival will be held with SSFF ASIA, co-organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

SCANDAL AT UPPSALA FILMFESTVAL

Couple of films, that had been chosen to participate in the international competition at 37.Uppsala film festival, where never screened for the Jury. It was just a coincident that two members of the jury discovered this the last day of the festival. By that time had the other three members of the Jury departed Uppsala so the films involved were disqualified with out the knowledge of the people behind those films. Among those films are The Last Farm, Circus by Thomas Pors from Denmark and Flying by Hirofumi Nagaike from Japan and some other films as well.

The Festival even tried to cover up this scandal but failed.

This has been confirmed by the Festival programmer Christoffer Olofsson.
